A GUIDE TO CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION, AND ASSESSMENT AT i3 ACADEMY

i3 Academic Model

I3 Academy is a public charter school founded in the Woodlawn area of Birmingham, Alabama opening in Fall of 2020. I3 will serve 420 learners in grades K-5 in its opening year. I3 Academy is modeled on the highly successful Charles Drew Charter School in the East Lake neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia.

The core of the I3 Academy program begins with early language development and a strong literacy and math foundation.

The i3 Academy Mission

Curriculum materials should align with the mission of I3 Academy: To empower learners to be agents of change for the problems they see in their world.

Problem-solving is a critical skill for the 21st century, and I3 instructional practices should prepare students toward this end. Ultimately, I3 students will be self-directed problem solvers who are highly equipped to solve local and global problems in a variety of ways.

The holistic model for I3 Academy includes the components outlined below:

i3 Academy Curriculum Selection

The Parents’ Right to Know Act (Act 2024-35) requires all school districts to ensure that information on current adopted curricula for each class is available on the website of the school and that access to online curricula is available to students, parents, or guardians of enrolled students. Please see the information below for direct links to textbooks provided by each vendor for each course and subject.  Full access to online textbooks and programs are accessible via your student’s i3 Academy device by using your student’s login credentials to access the CLEVER page. I3 Academy strives to carefully align all academic and curricular decisions with the Alabama State Department of Education’s Courses of Study, the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP), and the American College Test (ACT). The Alabama Courses of Study are available via the Alabama State Department of Education website.

Curricular resources at I3 Academy are selected by teams of educators representing diverse backgrounds in experience, specialty areas, and grade levels taught. Educators are provided with a quality rubric to determine how well the curriculum fits with the mission and vision of I3 Academy. I3 Academy seeks the highest quality resources and well-researched curricula to equip teachers to reach every child where they are in their learning journey.

Literacy at i3 Academy

Literacy at I3 Academy supports a child’s acquisition of language at every level. From early stage reading to literary analysis, our curriculum supports children at all levels to succeed and be appropriately challenged and supported in the classroom.

i3 Elementary:

Collaborative Literacy

The I3 Academy literacy curriculum is Collaborative Literacy, a resource from the Center for the Collaborative Classroom. There are three components to Collaborative Literacy. Collaborative Literacy is a comprehensive system of literacy instruction that fosters love of literacy, and allows learners to become lifelong readers and writers. At I3 Academy we utilize the whole Collaborative Literacy suite in order for each resource to be most effective.

The following are the components of Collaborative Literacy:

i3 Middle:

A+ College Ready’s 6-8 English curricula are designed using the National Math and Science Initiative’s (NMSI) Laying the Foundation (LTF) model lessons along with research-based teaching strategies in order to provide teachers with complete and rigorous courses. These English Language Arts (ELA) courses allow all students to engage in an in-depth study of a diverse array of literature through challenging yet scaffolded lessons that build a student’s reading, language, writing, speaking, and listening skills within a single course as well as from grade level to grade level. Curricular resources include 9-week Big Pictures, detailed pacing guides, standards alignment planning documents, teacher notes, and all lessons for the year with accompanying resources.

i3 High:

The curriculum used to support English Language Arts at the high school level is myPerspectives. myPerspectives® is a powerful, next generation literacy program that places students at the center of learning and gives teachers the right tools and resources, research-based guidance, and autonomy to do what they do best to support each unique learner. The curriculum is designed to:

  • Provide students with relevant and engaging content
  • Provide support and scaffolding for ALL leaders
  • Let students explore, share, and grow with collaborative experiences that hone writing, speaking, and listening skills

Math at i3 Academy

i3 Elementary:

Investigations 3

I3 Academy is adopting the most recent update of the Investigations math curriculum. Investigations has been widely used in the state of Alabama through the AMSTI (Alabama Math and Science Training Initiative) program.

i3 Middle:

The A+ College Ready E3 Math curricula integrate research-based best practices with required content for each grade level. The curricula encourage students to be actively engaged with the lessons by including hands-on activities and technology along with the opportunity to think, write, and speak mathematically.

Curricular resources contain a year-at-a-glance document and nine-weeks big pictures. Each unit within the curricula contains a unit overview, unit summary, scope and sequence, and lessons. The unit overview contains vocabulary and a concept checklist with a simplified Marzano scale. The unit summary contains the standards, essential questions, enduring understandings, knowledge, and skills for the unit. The scope and sequence contains the standards, prerequisite skills, teacher notes, and presentation strategies for each lesson.

i3 High:

enVision curriculum is used to support math instruction at the high school level. This curriculum aims to:

  • offers students choice in how they explore mathematics through engaging and meaningful topics
  • motivate students with connections to real social issues and experiences in problem-based learning
  • engage students in mathematical modeling to generate interest in the topic, assist students to organize thinking, and develop a growth mindset

Science at i3 Academy

i3 Elementary:

No specific curriculum has been adopted for science. Instead, Alabama Science Standards are embedded into our STEAM Enrichment Block and Project Based Learning Block to truly empower learners to be agents of change for the problems they see in their world.

i3 Middle:

The A+ College Ready Science Laying the Foundation, (LTF)-infused curricula are designed to provide students with the skills and content knowledge necessary to ultimately be successful in an AP Science course, in the workforce, and in life. The 6-10 prerequisite science courses require a student-facilitated, hands-on approach that weaves curriculum, pedagogy, and technology into a 5-E model of instruction designed to allow students to explore the world around them while making connections to big ideas in science.

Curricular resources include a nine-weeks big picture for each subject, pacing guides and recommended activities, detailed teacher notes, a student proficiency scale, student notes with embedded vocabulary and note interactions, corresponding student PowerPoint presentations, recommended grade-level labs and activities, checkpoint questions with grading rubrics, and optional unit assessment questions.

I3 High:

Science at the high school will utilize the curriculum, instructional practices, and material provided by Alabama Science in Motion (ASIM).

i3 Middle:

The A+ College Ready Computer Science Discoveries – Alabama is an introduction to computer science for 6-8th grade students, designed with a focus on building computational thinking skills. The course covers a wide range of computer science topics such as problem solving, design, programming, web development, data, and physical computing. All of the Alabama DLCS standards are included in the year 1 curriculum that consists of 6 units covering 6 weeks each. The CS Endeavors and CS and Society curriculum consists of 4 interchangeable 9-week long units.

i3 High:

The high school also uses A+ College Ready Computer Science curriculum called Program Foundations. It is an engaging course designed to challenge 9th or 10th grade students who have completed the middle school Computer Science Discoveries - Alabama course, as well as build interest and excitement for the AP Computer Science Principles course. The course’s six units are designed to interest high school students and allow them to explore the possibilities of computing in their future. This course covers all the DLCS 9-12 standards and is included in the new CTE IT COS.

Social-Emotional Learning

Caring School Community is produced by the Center for Collaborative Classroom, and was adopted in conjunction with the Collaborative Literacy program. The social-emotional learning (SEL) program is research-based and aligned to standards set by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

Caring School Community utilizes the following structures to build community within classrooms, within the school, and between the school and the broader community:
