RESPONSE-TO-INTERVENTION:

Response-to-Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tier approach to the early identifications and support of students with learning and behavior needs.

Core Principles of RTI:

  • Strong language/literacy, math and social emotional learning skills
  • High-quality instructions to meet the learning needs of all students
  • Universal screenings given to all students to inform differentiation and intervention

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING:

At I3 Academy, the social-emotional learning (SEL) will support all students. Dedicated time during the school day will be set aside for students to receive instruction in SEL. SEL provides instruction on skills for learning empathy, emotional management, self-management, self-awareness, friendship skills and problem solving.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS:

At I3 Academy, the social-emotional learning (SEL) will support all students. Dedicated time during the school day will be set aside for students to receive instruction in SEL. • Visual Art: Arts integrated into the classroom and in the visual art class are an important component of the project-based learning and STEAM curricula. Arts education has been linked to general academic success and pro-social outcomes, particularly for urban inner-city and ELL students (Catterall, 2009).
  • Makerspace: A dedicated makerspace will provide a creative space for learners to design, develop and build ideas. Maker education is a learner-centered approach to education that “positions agency and student interest at the center— asking students to become more aware of the design of the world around them, and begin to see themselves as people who can tinker, hack and improve that design.” (www.makered.org)
  • Foreign Language:  Language impacts the lives of people of any race, creed and region in the world. The ability to communicate in another language is becoming more and more important in our increasingly integrated global community.

STEAM:

The STEAM focus will allow I3 Academy students to excel through a rigorous academic curriculum that intentionally integrates core disciplines – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics – with other academic disciplines (e.g., social sciences and English/language arts) (Mathison and Freeman, 1997). This approach balances core classroom instruction with enrichment opportunities that support classroom learning.

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING:

According to the Buck Institute for Education, the leading organization working on Project- based learning (PBL), “PBL is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem or challenge.”

Students who participate in PBL experience these characteristics:

  • Challenging problem or question
  • Sustained inquiry
  • Authenticity
  • Student voice and choice
  • Reflection
  • Critique and Revision
  • Public Product
